Richard III

Richard III

The last English king to die in battle – at Bosworth in 1485 – Richard was a controversial monarch in turbulent times. This is reflected in his hasty burial without the usual trappings for a king, and his grave was lost until the recent excavation of site of the ancient Franciscan friary, Greyfriars, in Leicester.

In fact, the mystery surrounding the location of Richard’s grave was deepened by Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries as part of his split from Rome, which resulted in Greyfriars being demolished in the late 1530s.
