NIGERIA: Attacks pile pressure on Christian Community

Christians becoming desperate – prelate.

In the wake of the latest fatal bomb attack on a church, on October 28, in which at least eight people died, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Jos spoke both of the fears of Christians and the frustrations of clerics.

“We as pastors have reached a state of near desperation, seeing children, women and men bombed out of existence,” he said.

Archbishop Kaigama pointed out that the violence against the Christian community was also prompting thoughts of retaliation amongst at least some, and there have been a handful of violent acts against Muslims. However, the archbishop said that the message from the country’s Catholic prelates remained the same: “Our message to our people has been consistent. No aggression and no retaliation. This is a test of our Christian faith, a time to be Christ-like.”
